It's the adult's responsibility to raise their own children, not Anet's.

The fact that Anet provided a content filter gives parents enough utility to manage these things on their own.

It's crazy that we have to watch our language because some 30 year-old dead beat with a child on their lap, is typing "F$@$ You!" in team chat, and simultaneously turns around and refers someone in General chat, for swearing.

It's obvious that personal responsibility is vacant in this country.

It's not just your country (which is that? America? UK?), it's global. There's a 'blame someone else' culture in society these days, which probably comes from a combination of things: Laziness; Ignorance; Cheap Lawyers and Cheap Lawsuits; Piles and Piles of Government Legislation. People seem to be saying "Why should I control myself? Other people can do that for me, and I can blame them when I get hurt."; it's not good and I'm hoping there's going to be a big backlash in the near future before this all gets too far out of hand.

Self control is good *thumbs up*
Blaming someone else for your own failings is bad *thumbs down*

Now back to the swearing: perhaps it's parents that don't want their precious snowflake to see bad words that are reporting, but not realising that little Bobby Jr. already knows these words and has turned the filter off?

Isn't this thread about someone not having self-control and swear in public (thumbs up in your case), and then came here and blame someone else for not using filter/not strong enough to take the words (which, as you said, thumbs down)?

Yeah, I agree entirely...And you made me laugh.

It's not my responsibility to make sure little Timmy doesn't hear the F word...F that!

I don't see a content filter when you walk downtown...I see one on Guild Wars.

Enough said...This is a game, not life.

I think people tend to forget that when you buy GW, you're paying for a 'lifetime' membership to Anet's happenin' private club. Like any private club, there are a set of rules (ToS, EULA) members must abide to, or they're out. It's really that simple.

What's the difference? It's the people that play the game who are offended by it, not the in-game character, silly.

Just take some deep breaths if something is going wrong. If ANet don't want swearing in the game, that's their decision and not yours. You agree to the terms of playing so stick to them.

It's not difficult to avoid swearing. Especially considering you have to type it.. not just say it. :/

Of course. I still have the right to disagree with what's ridiculously unchangeable.

If you don't want to read the word F$%&, turn your filter "On"

If you don't care, turn your filter "Off"

If you're an idiot, turn your filter "Off", then complain that you saw something that offended you.

Sorry, but I'm slightly confused: not having self control is bad and goes with blaming someone else, also bad. The person who reported them probably had their filter off, and found the '---'s excessive, and possibly thought that the OP used such words all the time.

Yes, my analogy wasn't exactly what I wanted to say (apply to as you may, it falls apart. Hmm, where have I seen that before? *glares at assorted philosophers*), and isn't clear it seems. Let me see if I can work on that:

OP shouldn't swear so much, should take responsibility for their own actions. ANet has a Terms of Service agreement as per the standard for their area (?), which also allows them to have a certain rating because viewing 'bad' language is a choice. Reporter realised ANet's ToS, figured OP did aswell, but was ignoring it, so reported OP for excessive use (some personal experience may fall into this as well). ANet agreed with Reporter's judgment, made OP temp-banned.

ANet has responsibility to police (as it were) their servers.
Reporter is helping ANet do their job.
OP screwed up and got annoyed, decieded to let everyone know that they can't handle people taking offense to their words?

*shrugs* That's all I've got.

Edit: Unless people get offended by hyphens. I know a lot of people have no idea what a hyphen is (my last name uses one:
Me: 'Hyphen, D, A...'
Them: 'Wait, what's a hyphen?'
Me: 'A floaty line.'
Them: 'Oh, ok.' (proceeds to spell and say my name wrong for the next six months)

And when it's in their best interest to keep it the way it is in order to sustain a 'T'een rating, I'd rather it be unchangeable.

So many people saying "There's a content filter!".

Anet have stated by their temp-ban to the OP that they do not consider the existence of said filter to be justification to allow him to use foul language in public chat. In fact it solidifies the position of the "prudes" and THEY are the ones in the right where the OP is in the wrong and deserved his punishment.

He now needs to take this lesson to heart and choose another channel to vent his frustrations...

Forum fights are as lame as in game chat fights.. If you get banned for a reason live with it. I feel more for the people who get banned for no reason.

I'm honestly done.
I understand that what Anet says, is what goes...

My argument is that, people aren't responsible for their own actions anymore,
and Anet's supporting that.

Anyways, you guys have fun with your circlejerk and patting Anet on the back.

And yet you defend the OP for getting banned by Anet because of HIS OWN ACTION?

Isn't this "hypocrite"?

And rightfully so IMHO.

There's just no need for you to be typing that in chat.

I'm an Admin on a popular FPS server and I'm a toughie when it comes to in-game chat.

If you're on TeamSpeak or Vent it's very easy to get surprised or killed and yell "What the _ _ _ _ " . It happens to a lot of us.

I don't have a problem with that all. In fact in Teamspeak you can use whatever language you want as long as you're not abusive to another player.

What I have a problem with is when people go out of their way to type expletives in Chat. It is totally unnecessary and just demonstrates a lack of maturity and control.

You never know who's playing on the other side and what they may or may not be offended by.

I believe it is YOUR responsibility as a gamer not to offend other people.

I don't care if the game is rated "T" or "M" - you never know if some brilliant 10 year old is taking advanced calculus so his parents let him play a game supervised as a reward.

Sound far-fetched ? Maybe, but I know of several parents who allow their kids to play CoD4 or BF2 on our servers but would never dream of allowing them on TeamSpeak.
